JOB TITLE: Controls Specialist II
DURATION: Permanent Full-Time
LOCATION: University of Central Florida (UCF), Main Campus, Orlando, FL – On-Site
HOURS: Mon – Fri 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
SALARY: ~$60 – $70k

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Controls Specialist II, responsible for the proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and efficient operation of HVAC systems through the campus’s Building Automation Systems (BAS). This role requires a seasoned professional with a robust understanding of HVAC control systems and the ability to analyze and optimize system performance for energy efficiency and operational effectiveness.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support and perform retro-commissioning and first-analysis of HVAC performance to ensure coordinated operations and maintenance of systems through proactive analysis of BAS front-end and back-end software platforms.
- Perform continuous updates and improvements to system front-end graphics, back-end programming, and parametric configurations/databases/& networks.
- Conducts minor repairs, such as coordinating and assisting in complex corrective and planned maintenance on the following, but not limited to:
- Pneumatic air systems, DDC controls, cooling towers, chillers, boilers, heating hot water and steam systems, hydronic pumps and related piping and components, chilled water air handlers, fan-coil units, VAV terminal boxes, direct expansion (DX), PTAC units, exhaust fans, ventilated systems, CRAC and CRAH units.
- Analyze, prioritize, create, and execute work requests in the CMMS based on data from building automation systems and service requests.
- Monitor system performance and make adjustments to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
- Install, repair, replace, and recalibrate BAS controllers, terminal devices, and related components to maintain continuously commissioned HVAC BAS controls.
- Work collaboratively with Energy Services and other departments to support energy audits and implement system improvements.
- Serve as a first responder to indoor environmental issues, coordinating necessary repairs or adjustments.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all operations and interventions in the CMMS.
- Provide professional customer service, ensuring high levels of satisfaction and effective communication with stakeholders.
- Mentor and train less experienced technicians, sharing knowledge to elevate team capabilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in controls systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven Experience with BAS Systems such as Siemens, Delta, Trane, or Automated Logic Corporation (ALC) is essential.
- Strong knowledge of electronics / electrical controls components, such as low-voltage electrical systems, transformers, control valves, DC signals, etc.
- Strong experience/ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair HVAC / electrical controls systems in a timely and efficient manner.
- Experience utilizing BAS programming languages to navigate software interfaces, make adjustments, or modify programming during repair of HVAC systems.
- Strong understanding of system theory and control concepts, including the design and testing of control strategies.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, relevant certifications pertinent to building controls and automation systems.
- Valid Class E driver’s license may be required as this position involves travel to various locations on and off campus.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an Engineering-related field is highly desired, but not required.
- Prior experience as an HVAC technician is desired, but not required.
- Experience with Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS) and advanced diagnostic tools.
