Engineering and Design Lead

NJ/PA (40% National Travel)

6-month Contract with potential extension

$75/hour ($150,000/year)


As the Engineering and Design Lead, you will work alongside the Engineering and Property Services group at our Fortune 500 Life Sciences client. This group is responsible for buildings around the world providing end to end services from Real Estate, Engineering & Strategic Project Delivery to Facilities Management. You will be leading complex capital project related engineering and design activities in alignment with business objectives and Project Delivery Practices with a strong focus on Facility Infrastructure systems such as plant (chilled water, electrical, steam, etc) and clean utilities (Purified Water, Water for Injection, Compressed air, HVAC, etc).

This role will also be accountable for providing technical direction, coordination, and alignment of systems for complex projects in alignment with the Subject Matter Experts. 

A suitable candidate for this role will have experience working with Pharmaceutical and or Medical Device Manufacturing facilities and systems, architectural systems and finishes, clean/plant utility and HVAC systems.

You will be responsible for using appropriate tools and coordinating the efforts of technical team members and third-party design firms or consultants to deliver the engineering and design aspects of projects according to plan.


Minimum Qualifications:

·      Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

·      Minimum of 10+ years of experience in engineering, operations and/or asset management activities

·      Demonstrated history of collaboration across other functional areas to establish effective working relationships

·      Expertise delivering complex projects/programs on schedule and budget working with project teams

·      Experience with delivering large complex capital projects (>$50MM TIC)

·      Strong business acumen and relationship building skills

·      Proven experience to effectively partner and deliver results in a matrixed environment

·      Strong technical background in Plant and Clean utility systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

·      Master’s degree in Engineering or Business preferred

·      Experience working in a lead role at an AE Design Firm or directly leading an AE Firm on a large project.

·   Proficiency in project/design management, including acquiring agreement on project definition and priorities, and ensuring that resources, capabilities and processes are in place to deliver the design efficiently and effectively

·      Global experience


·      Prepare/Review Requests for Proposal (RFP) for Architect/Engineer (A/E) services and leads A/E interviews/selection and on-boarding process

·      Provide support to develop our standard JNJ contract with AE Firms for engineering and design work

·      Lead the design process for system design including (Arch, Mech, Elec, Building Automation, etc.) working closely with operating company team and J&J SMEs.

·      Assure that the Project Delivery Process is followed

·      Work with the Engineering & Design Director, Project Dir./Project Mgr. to drive the performance (cost, schedule, quality) of A/E firm and define correction action plans if necessary 

·      Assure use of the Value Improving Practices (VIPs), Value Engineering and Constructability Reviews

·      Assure the appropriate company standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements (cGXP, EHS, …) are incorporated

·      Coordinate/lead key design reviews with SMEs including other corporate or affiliate resources such as EHSS, Risk Management, WW Security, etc.

·      Assure that the company Standard Design Platforms are deployed on all projects. Setup project specific training for internal and external SMEs.

·      Assure projects meet the company Sustainability policy and drive the certification process

·      Review AE progress and identify action plans where required. Implement Earned Value tracking on larger projects. Ensure AE issues Monthly Reports

·      Lead effort to resolve key design conflicts in construction and commissioning phase with appropriate SMEs 

·      Participate in the final close-out with the A/E firm including the Lessons Learned process
