ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior/Lead Data Center Technician (L5) to provide advanced technical leadership and hands-on support within their data center operations across multiple locations in Northern Virginia with some nationwide traveling. This role goes beyond standard rack/stack/patch and cabling work; it requires the technical depth to handle complex, high-visibility installations, the judgment to troubleshoot and resolve issues independently, and the leadership presence to guide and mentor less experienced technicians onsite. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted escalation point for both the team and the client, maintain rigorous quality control over all installations and documentation, and ensure strict adherence to industry standards and safety protocols. The position offers competitive hourly pay and benefits, including health, dental, and vision insurance, within a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead and perform complex server, network device, and storage installations per elevation diagrams, including non-standard or high-density configurations
- Review and validate the work of junior technicians for accuracy, grounding, and cable clearance compliance
- Serve as the on-site technical escalation point for installation issues
- Install, route, dress, and terminate fiber optic and copper cabling between racks, MOR, PRD racks, and IDFs, including complex or high-density runs
- Own quality control for cable labeling, terminations, and testing (OTDR, Fluke tester, etc.) across the team's work
- Maintain and enforce pathway/tray standards and white space organization, ensuring cleanliness and order across all assigned areas
- Champion and enforce Microsoft and OSHA safety protocols on-site, including PPE, ladder safety, and confined space rules
- Lead toolbox talks, safety walkthroughs, and audits, identifying and correcting safety gaps proactively
- Mentor and train L1-L3 technicians on technical skills, quality standards, and safe work practices
- Provide informal shift leadership, including task delegation and prioritization when a project manager is not on-site
- Support onboarding of new technicians into site-specific processes and expectations
- Serve as a key point of contact between the crew, Brooksource Project Managers, Area Leads, and Microsoft DCPMs
- Provide detailed daily updates on progress, blockers, and completed work, escalating issues proactively
- Author or refine Method of Procedure (MOP) documentation for recurring or complex tasks
- Lead rework and remediation efforts to meet quality standards, and identify root causes to prevent recurrence
- Support project planning input based on on-the-ground technical realities
WHAT YOU BRING
- 5+ years of experience in data center or mission-critical technical environments, including advanced rack/stack/patch and structured cabling
- Expert in data center technical infrastructure; MOR, PRD, White Glove, Post Dock, NDT File creation and understanding, Cable termination
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and train junior technicians on technical skills, quality standards, and safety practices
- Deep hands-on knowledge of copper and fiber cabling standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI) and experience with cable testing tools (OTDR, Fluke tester, etc.)
- Strong networking knowledge (IP addressing, switches, routers) beyond a basic level
- Ability to work independently, make sound judgment calls, and serve as a technical escalation point
- Experience in fast-paced, project-driven environments with shifting priorities and frequent ownership of complex tasks
- Comfortable working in physically demanding environments, including lifting 50+ lbs, working on ladders, in overhead pathways, and in confined spaces
- Able to reliably commute throughout Northern Virginia
- Open to nationwide traveling for 1-2 weeks at a time a few times a year
- Preferred certifications include CompTIA Network+, BICSI Installer II or Technician, OSHA NFPA 70E, or other relevant advanced technical certifications
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU
- Competitive hourly pay based on experience
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Opportunity to lead and mentor within a high-impact, mission-critical environment
- Exposure to advanced data center technologies and complex installations
- Work onsite across multiple state-of-the-art data center locations in Northern Virginia
