Lead Data Engineer
Fully Remote
12+ Month Contract to Hire
Our Fortune 50 Healthcare Insurance client’s AI/ML Platforms group is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to drive the technical strategy and execution of data engineering initiatives supporting scalable data and AI products. This fully remote, contract-to-hire position is ideal for a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about mentoring talent, shaping engineering practices, and building robust data pipelines using modern cloud-native tools. The Lead Data Engineer will balance hands-on implementation (~50%) with leadership and strategic oversight as the team and product portfolio grow. You will mentor and guide a team of engineers, conduct code reviews, and ensure high-quality delivery, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, scalable data and AI products.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven experience in Databricks and cloud-based data engineering
- Strong background in data engineering, data science, and AI
- Expertise in Python, ETL pipeline development, and modern data architectures
- Experience leading technical teams and mentoring both senior and junior engineers
- Ability to define and drive engineering practices in a dynamic, product-focused environment
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Passion for building scalable data products and mentoring future technical leaders
- Comfortable working in a hybrid role that blends hands-on engineering with strategic leadership
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the technical vision and execution for data engineering across AI/ML product development initiatives
- Design and implement mature, scalable ETL pipelines within Databricks, leveraging Medallion Architecture and cloud-native best practices
- Develop data engineering solutions using Python, RDE/RDS, and other core technologies
- Define, document, and evolve engineering standards, architecture, and development workflows
- Mentor and guide a growing team of engineers, including senior and entry-level talent, providing technical oversight and supporting professional growth
- Conduct code reviews to ensure high-quality, maintainable, and secure code delivery
- Balance hands-on implementation (~50%) with leadership and strategic responsibilities as the team and product portfolio scale
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, scalable data and AI products
