Job Description
Release Train Engineer
Brooksource
Fortune 50 Health Insurance Client
Remote
About the Role:
Our client’s Digital Omnichannel organization is in the midst of a major transformation to the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), introducing Program Increment (PI) Planning across all delivery teams over the next few quarters.
We’re seeking a senior-level Release Train Engineer (RTE) who can do more than just facilitate ceremonies — someone who thrives in dynamic, complex environments and isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo. The ideal candidate will bring the right mix of Agile leadership, product understanding, and influence to drive meaningful change across teams.
This RTE will support one of two Product ARTs — either FindCare (focused on provider search and member/potential member experiences) or Benefits (focused on benefits shopping, UI, and member management). One ART is already up and running (5 teams), while the other is in its stand-up phase (4 teams).
This is a high-visibility, enterprise-scale opportunity for someone who’s passionate about delivering value and guiding teams toward Agile maturity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and facilitate Program Increment (PI) Planning and readiness across multiple ARTs.
- Establish and maintain iteration and PI calendars; ensure alignment across all delivery teams.
- Partner closely with Product Management, Scrum Masters, and Engineering leaders to drive visibility, alignment, and capacity planning for two-week sprints.
- Coach teams through SAFe and Agile ceremonies — fostering adoption of Lean-Agile principles and continuous improvement.
- Facilitate Scrum of Scrums, Product Syncs, and cross-team dependency management sessions.
- Identify, escalate, and resolve impediments while ensuring smooth delivery across ARTs.
- Partner with leaders to validate value streams and optimize workflow and predictability.
- Support the rollout and usage of Jira Align (enterprise implementation in progress) and Azure DevOps for tracking and reporting.
- Act as a change agent, influencing at all levels — from team members to executives — to promote Lean-Agile values and accountability.
- Navigate and manage resistance to SAFe adoption and collaborate with tougher or skeptical leaders to build trust and buy-in.
What You Bring:
- 3+ years of experience as a Release Train Engineer in a large enterprise or Fortune 500-scale environment.
- Prior experience as a Scrum Master and ideally as a Product Owner or Product Manager — someone who understands the product lifecycle and how it connects to the ART.
- Proven experience standing up new ARTs and leading teams through SAFe transformations.
- Hands-on experience with remote PI Planning.
- Strong understanding of SAFe 6.0 principles, Lean Portfolio Management (LPM), and Agile coaching.
- Experience with Jira Align (or similar tools like Azure DevOps); exposure to a full Jira Align rollout is highly preferred.
- Active SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE 6.0) certification required.
- SPC certification preferred.
- Confident, influential communicator who can partner effectively with VPs, Product leaders, and delivery teams.
- Comfortable challenging assumptions and influencing continuous improvement with tact, confidence, and enthusiasm.
- Healthcare experience is a plus but not required — the focus is on enterprise-level Agile experience and leadership.
Soft Skills & Cultural Fit:
- Go-getter — energetic, proactive, and driven by outcomes.
- Confident and poised.
- Collaborative — fosters trust across teams with open, honest communication.
- Excited about the product and passionate about driving value for members and users.
