Job Description
Prototype Technician
On-Site Role
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is seeking a skilled Prototype Technician to support New Product Development (NPD) projects by designing and building prototype models for testing and analysis. In this hands-on role, you will collaborate closely with engineers to conduct field return analysis, including controlled teardown and testing to determine failure modes. You will perform wind tunnel and sound testing, assist with gas lab testing of water heaters and furnaces, and support MCO projects by building comparative samples and conducting specialized testing to satisfy customer requirements. Additionally, you will contribute to Reliability Engineering efforts on NPD projects and Nonconformance Material Reports (NMRs) as needed. The ideal candidate is adaptable, safety-conscious, and able to manage multiple projects in a collaborative environment, with a strong background in machine shop operations, prototype building, and technical communication.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Support New Product Development (NPD) projects by designing and building prototype models for testing and analysis
- Assist engineers with field return analysis, including testing and controlled teardown to determine failure modes
- Conduct wind tunnel and sound testing for product evaluation
- Assist with gas lab testing of water heaters and furnaces
- Support engineers on MCO projects by building comparative samples and conducting specialized testing to meet customer approval requirements
- Support Reliability Engineering on NPD projects and Nonconformance Material Reports (NMRs) as required
- Ensure proper use of safety personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Document prototype builds and testing procedures accurately and thoroughly
- Collaborate with development teams and product management, including during customer visits
- Adapt to shifting project priorities and manage multiple assignments in parallel
WHAT YOU BRING
- High School diploma required; Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent preferred
- Experience operating lathe, milling machines, and other machine shop equipment
- Experience building routine and complex samples and prototype models with proper documentation
- Ability to manage multiple projects and shift between tasks as needed
- Teamwork skills to complete projects on time in a collaborative environment
- Experience with 3D modeling (e.g., SolidWorks) and GDT dimensioning/tolerancing
- Experience with 3D printing and advanced machining (e.g., HURCO 3D Machine Center)
- Knowledge of mechanical assembly/disassembly methods for Air Moving products
- Demonstrated capabilities in lab automation systems
- Good communication skills for assisting development teams and product management, including during customer visits
- Basic computer skills; proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and email preferred
- Proficiency with numerical analysis tools (e.g., Ansys FEA/CFD/Thermal) is a plus
- Strong commitment to safety and compliance with PPE requirements
