Senior Python Backend Engineer

Waukegan, IL (Hybrid – Tues–Thurs onsite, Mon & Fri remote)

W-2 Contract through EOY (expected renewal)

$70-80/hr W-2


ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client, a Fortune 500 biopharmaceutical company, is seeking a Senior Python Backend Engineer for a hybrid Waukegan, IL-based W-2 contract role. In this position, you will play a key role in building agentic AI capabilities into the IT Service Management (ITSM) platform, enabling automated agents to pick up, diagnose, and resolve IT tickets end-to-end. You will focus on developing and maintaining production-grade, headless Python backend services and APIs that power automation workflows and integrate with ServiceNow, reducing manual L1/L2 support, improving speed and consistency, and enabling scalable automation across enterprise IT operations. The work is primarily backend Python (80–90%), with some React/TypeScript for internal admin tooling. This is a hands-on, senior-level engineering role with significant responsibility for production readiness, code quality, and mentoring, operating within a formal Agile Scrum environment.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Build, extend, and support headless, production-grade Python backend services and APIs to automate ITSM workflows.
  • Develop and maintain ServiceNow integrations operating in live, production enterprise infrastructure.
  • Contribute React/TypeScript code to internal admin portals used to oversee and govern automation behavior.
  • Ensure production readiness, including logging, monitoring, debugging, and incident support for backend systems.
  • Lead code reviews, enforce backend engineering standards, and mentor junior and nearshore developers.
  • Participate in Scrum ceremonies, including daily standups, bi-weekly sprint planning, sprint reviews, and retrospectives, delivering work aligned with committed sprint goals.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners and Business Systems Analysts to define user stories, acceptance criteria, and definitions of done.
  • Evaluate and challenge non-scalable or non-production-ready designs and patterns, proposing improved solutions within enterprise constraints.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Senior-level experience building and supporting production-level Python backend systems and APIs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing in large, highly structured enterprise Agile environments.
  • Strong background in logging, monitoring, debugging, and supporting real systems in production.
  • Proven ability to own code quality, mentor junior engineers, and enforce backend engineering standards; able to push back on bad patterns and advocate for scalable solutions.
  • Working experience with React and TypeScript for internal admin portals.
  • Comfort operating within delivery governance, SLAs, and cross-functional stakeholder expectations.
  • Ability to work onsite in Waukegan, IL (Tuesday–Thursday), with remote work on Monday and Friday.

NICE TO HAVE

  • Exposure to LLMs, agentic frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI), or production use of LLM APIs, including personal projects.
  • Experience integrating with ServiceNow, Remedy, or other enterprise ITSM platforms.
  • Experience building and running backend services in AWS production environments.
  • Familiarity with enterprise IT infrastructure domains (compute, networking, DNS/DHCP, load balancing, monitoring tools).
