Hybrid Role - Birmingham, AL

Compensation: $30 - $40 per hour

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client, a Fortune 50 Energy & Utilities company, is seeking a Technical Writer to support both application development and GIS/engineering teams. In this contract opportunity, you will be responsible for documenting technical processes, systems, workflows, and procedures across a diverse technology environment. This role is ideal for a self-starter who can work independently, collaborate with technical stakeholders, identify documentation gaps, and develop clear, scalable documentation from the ground up. You will take ownership of loosely defined documentation needs, understand complex technical processes, and bring back recommendations and solutions to the team. Your work will ensure that documentation remains current, relevant, and accessible as systems and technologies evolve.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Partner with application development, GIS, engineering, and technical teams to understand systems, workflows, and business processes
• Create, maintain, and modernize technical documentation, including processes, procedures, workflows, system documentation, and technical guides
• Review and update existing documentation to improve clarity, consistency, usability, and relevancy
• Develop documentation from scratch for teams and processes that currently have limited or no formal documentation
• Interview technical subject matter experts and translate complex technical concepts into clear, user-friendly documentation
• Identify documentation gaps and recommend opportunities to improve documentation processes and standards
• Establish and maintain documentation templates, standards, and best practices
• Work with project teams to understand project tracking, requirements, and delivery processes
• Leverage Jira and other project tracking/work management tools to gather and organize technical information
• Collaborate across multiple technical domains and adapt documentation approaches based on the audience and subject matter
• Take ownership of documentation initiatives with limited direction and proactively bring recommendations and options to project leadership
• Keep documentation current as systems, applications, processes, and technologies evolve

WHAT YOU BRING

• 3–5 years of experience in technical writing, technical documentation, business process documentation, or a related field (preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to independently gather information, understand technical processes, and produce high-quality documentation
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience documenting technical processes, workflows, systems, or procedures
• Ability to work across multiple technical subject areas and learn new technologies quickly
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Background or experience in GIS, engineering, software development, or a related technical discipline (preferred)
• Experience working with Jira or other project tracking/work management platforms (preferred)
• Familiarity with Python scripting or the ability to understand basic scripts and technical workflows (preferred)
• Experience working with application development teams and/or GIS platforms, tools, or processes (preferred)
• Experience creating documentation standards, templates, or knowledge bases (preferred)
• Experience modernizing or consolidating legacy documentation (preferred)
• Self-starter with the ability to take ownership of documentation initiatives with limited direction
• Ability to interview subject matter experts, research processes, and independently turn information into useful documentation
• Technical breadth to navigate a varied technology environment and strong curiosity to learn unfamiliar applications, processes, and concepts quickly
